Biting in the toddler room

Three biting incidents in a week, the same little one each time. We’re shadowing and noting what happens before, but the families of the children bitten are understandably upset. How do you word the conversation with both families?

Autumn menu is up on the wall and the children chose the names. Leek and potato is now ‘dragon soup’. Sharing the four weeks in case it saves anyone a job.

Sleep checks: paper or tablet?

We’re reviewing how we record sleep checks in the baby room. What do you use?

New shelves in the toddler room, finally. Everything at child height, everything with a picture label. We spent the afternoon deciding where the puzzles live.

Passed my Level 3 today. Four years of evenings and weekends. Very proud and very, very tired.

Staff phones on outings

We take the setting phone on every outing, but staff say they need their own for emergencies too. How have other settings handled this, so it’s fair on staff and still keeps children safe?

We’ve got a new starter who’s brilliant with the children but keeps missing the handover. How do I raise it without knocking her confidence?

Look at when it happens. For us it was always just before lunch, when everyone was hungry and the room was loud. Moving lunch ten minutes earlier stopped it.

The rules

Kept kind,
by everyone in it.

Six simple rules for the staff room. Short, clear and followed by everyone, including us.

  • Be kind, be useful

People ask because they’re stuck. Help first, and share what’s worked for you.

  • No children’s names, ever

Keep children and families private. If a story could identify someone, change the details.

  • Anonymous means anonymous

Other members never see who posted anonymously. A number appears instead of your name.

  • Nobody sees who’s online

See how many people are around, never who they are.

  • Share what’s yours

Share your own ideas, resources and experience. If something came from elsewhere, say so.

  • The same rules apply to us

Our team joins conversations too, clearly marked in green, and follows the same rules as everyone else.
